About Southeast Public Transit

Southeast Public Transit is a non-profit, public transit agency formed through the merger of Yankton Transit and Vermillion Public Transit, aimed at enhancing transportation services across southeastern South Dakota.  The organization is managed by River Cities Public Transit.

Yankton Transit began in 1995, initially established to provide essential transportation services within Yankton and the surrounding area. It focused on serving the local community, offering demand-response services, especially for seniors and individuals with disabilities. Over the years, Yankton Transit expanded its services to meet the growing needs of the population, emphasizing accessibility and reliability.

Vermillion Public Transit, on the other hand, began operations in 1997 with a mission to connect residents of Vermillion and the surrounding communities to essential services, including education, employment, and healthcare. Like Yankton Transit, it prioritized accessible transportation, catering to a diverse user base that included students from the nearby University of South Dakota and residents who relied on public transit for daily commutes.
